The growing of reed

The reed (warbler) grows naturally without adding any fertilizer or insecticide in humid areas called salt marshes.
The plant is putting out shoots towards mid-April. Water level is controled and growth ends in mid-July when a flower appears at the top of the stem.

Harvesting begins towards mid-December, with rising sap, as soon as leaves fall and sap recedes.

Reeds are cut and tied into bundles and are stored on the banks of the marshes during winter.

During yield and until the end of July, other teams are responsible for cleaning the stems and for packaging bundles of 60 centimeters of circumference.

The second operation consists of making 'big bales' of 100 bundles, and in conveying them in barns by boom truck.

This way, the goods are sheltered all year long.

The company “Les roseaux de Camargue » also sells accessories that are needed to install the reed on the roof :
  • galvanized bars
  • galvanized and stainless steel binding wire
  • brown or red ridge-tiles

The reeds are then conditionned in bundles of reeds of 100 bundles and are stored in our barns to be available all year long.   Thatched roofs are in harmony with the landscapes of many regions.
